Solwest 80 was a joint conference of two regional chapters of the International
Solar Energy Society (ISES). At the time I was heavily involved in low-cost
conservation technologies for residences. One method of cost management was to
avoid the need for building permits.
Working with Seattle building officials, I designed and built an attached solar
greenhouse that did not require a permit. This information was presented as a
poster titled Codes and the Solar Builder at the conference as I
was unable to attend and present the paper. I am not posting the paper
for two reasons. First, building codes have changed and I do not want to be
referenced if someone violates codes based on an old work. Second - and most
important - I am a much better writer now. Revising the piece would push the
definition of "editing" a little too far for my comfort.
